Top 10 Indoor Plants for Purifying The Air

The phenomenal effects of indoor plants are astounding, as a NASA study proved. Up to 87% of air toxins found in offices were removed within a 24 hours period, thanks to the introduction of plants. The results of this research can be found in a book called ‘How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 Houseplants That Purify Your Home or Office’.

The plants outlined in the book had the ability to filter the air; removing pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, ammonia and xylene, which can enter the home through furniture, PVC products and household cleaners.

Before we all rush out and buy some indoor plants, let’s look at some of the most effective plants for filtering the air, lifting our mood and even help us stop snoring!

Mother-in-law’s tongue

Also known by the rather less offensive name of Snake Plant or sansevieria trifasciata, this common indoor plant is hardy and attractive. With a little watering now and then, it will keep on keeping on. Keep in a sunny position.

Ficus

Also known as the Weeping Fig, the Ficus is a powerhouse air filter. A low maintenance plant, the Ficus will flourish in a spot with filtered sunlight.

Pineapple Plant

 

Plants from the pineapple family have been found to increase oxygen,  boost air quality, and have a positive effect on snoring. This makes them ideal in the bedroom.

Dracaena

With many varieties to choose from, the Dracaena is sure to have a plant which appeals to your taste. A word of caution: this plant is toxic to pets, so those with cats and dogs may wisht to steer clear of this one.

Spider Plant

For those lacking a green thumb, spider plants are one of the easiest plants to maintain. Even with a minimum of care that will be quietly filtering both formaldehyde and xylene from the air.

Garden Mum

 

One of the standouts in the field, the Garden Mum or Chrysanthemum, is both affordable, readily available and one of the most effective plants at cleaning toxins and pollutants from indoor air.

Peace Lily

Emitting a lovely aroma, the Peace Lily is also one of the prettiest plants on our list. A word of caution – this plant may not be the best choice for allergy sufferers. Best in a shady spot and keep the soil moist without overwatering.

Boston Fern

Powerhouses of filtering both formaldehyde and xylene from the air, Boston Ferns are attractive and healthful. Ideal in the bathroom, as they need to be kept away from direct sunlight and watered regularly.

Aloe Vera

Along with having leaves filled with liquid gold as far as skin health, the Aloe Vera plant is known to remove formaldehyde from the air.

Devil’s Ivy

Also known as Golden Pothos, this is a decorative plant is another hardworking air filter. Best avoided for those with pets as it is known to be toxic to them.
